JAIPUR: BJP councillor Sunil Kothari won the Jaipur mayoral election on September 25, receiving 89 votes against Congress candidate Sunita Mawar’s 60. One councillor selected NOTA, and all 150 councillors participated.

Kothari, the councillor from Ward 112 and a former city BJP president, took charge at the municipal headquarters after the result. Mawar represents Ward 85. The 29-vote margin settled a contest that had been delayed by repolling in four wards.

The BJP had won 78 wards in the civic election, so Kothari’s mayoral tally included support beyond the party’s own elected strength. The result alone does not identify how individual councillors voted.

Kothari rejected Congress accusations that the ruling party had misused its position and said the administration would work with all councillors. Mawar said Congress would act as an active opposition.

The opposition identified sanitation, parking, fire safety and incorrect urban development tax notices among the issues it intended to raise. These competing priorities now form part of the political agenda facing Jaipur’s newly elected municipal leadership.
