BENGALURU: Police detained members of the AICCTU-affiliated BBMP Powrakarmikara Sangha during a demonstration outside Vidhana Soudha, according to a September 12 report. Contract civic workers were pressing several demands and seeking an apology over remarks by Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda.
Union president Nirmala M criticised the police action and said workers should be able to raise their concerns through peaceful protest. She alleged delayed wages, denial of employment benefits and exploitation by contractors. Those claims were attributed to the union and were not resolved by the detention itself.
The dispute followed the minister’s comments during surprise visits to parts of the city. He had questioned how contract staff could be made permanent when attendance was irregular, saying roughly 30% of workers were absent during his inspections.
The remarks prompted differing public responses. Some supported an emphasis on attendance and responsibility, while labour representatives objected to what they described as public humiliation of workers.
The confrontation exposed the gap between demands for dependable civic services and workers’ calls for secure employment and timely pay. The report did not announce a settlement of the employment dispute.
