HYDERABAD | CITY POLITICS | 17 OCTOBER 2026
Organisers announced that Hyderabad’s annual Alai Balai gathering would take place at the Nampally Exhibition Grounds on 22 October, bringing political leaders, public representatives and residents together around Telangana’s cultural traditions. The 17 October announcement placed a drug-free India theme at the centre of this year’s programme.
A cross-party meeting place
Alai Balai Foundation chairperson Bandaru Vijayalakshmi and former governor Bandaru Dattatreya described the post-Dasara event as a platform for social harmony. The gathering has a history of convening figures from different parties beyond their usual partisan settings. Organisers said cultural performances and Telangana food would be part of the programme.
Several senior leaders, including Union and state representatives, were expected to attend when the announcement was made. An expectation of attendance is not confirmation that every invited figure appeared. The event’s political significance lies in the opportunity for leaders who disagree in formal politics to share a public cultural platform.
Public theme and next step
Dattatreya said the anti-drug theme was intended to support awareness and help families affected by substance abuse. The announcement sets an advocacy theme; it does not amount to a new government programme or a measured reduction in drug use. Any policy commitments would need separate official statements and follow-up.
The scheduled date and venue were current as of 17 October. This report is dated to the organisers’ announcement, with subsequent attendance and outcomes to be reported separately.
